What are the hazards of hydro jetting?
Four real ones: injection injuries from the water stream, nozzle reversal back out of the cleanout, blowback through nearby fixtures, and sewage aerosol in enclosed spaces. Plus the plumbing risk of jetting a compromised line.
The pressure is the main hazard. Water at several thousand PSI will cut skin and inject debris into the wound, and those injuries get infected fast because of what is in a sewer line. Technicians wear face shields, waterproof gear and cut-resistant gloves for that reason.
On the plumbing side, jetting a compromised pipe can open a leak, and jetting without checking the downstream line can push a blockage into a worse spot. None of this is a reason to avoid the service, but it is a reason not to rent the machine.
Injection Injuries
This is the one that surprises people. A high-pressure stream does not cut like a blade; it penetrates skin through a small entry wound and drives water, and whatever it is carrying, into the tissue beneath. The entry point can look trivial while the damage underneath is extensive.
Because the water came from a sewer line, these are contaminated wounds by definition, and they are treated as surgical emergencies rather than first-aid cases. That is the reason for the gear, and the reason nobody experienced puts a hand near the nozzle while the pump is loaded.
Nozzle Reversal and Blowback
A jetter nozzle self-propels by directing most of its flow backward. That is how it climbs 80 feet of line against gravity. The flip side is that a hose which loses tension can turn around, and a nozzle coming back out of a cleanout at full pressure is pointed at whoever is standing there.
Blowback is the indoor version. Pressurise a blocked line and the water looks for the nearest opening, which might be a basement floor drain, a shower pan, or a toilet in the next room. Controlling it means knowing the layout, capping what needs capping, and starting at reduced pressure.
Aerosol and Confined Spaces
Jetting atomises whatever is in the line. Outdoors that is unpleasant. Inside a crawlspace or a small mechanical room it becomes a respiratory exposure, with the added problem that sewer gas displaces oxygen in low spots. Proper practice is ventilation, sometimes a respirator, and never working a confined space alone.
Raised-foundation homes across Belmont Shore, Naples and California Heights put a lot of drain line in exactly that kind of space, which is why crawlspace work gets its own setup rather than being treated as an extension of the driveway job.
The Plumbing-Side Hazards
Two worth naming. Jetting a pipe that is already thin or cracked can open a leak, which is what the pre-inspection is for. And jetting upstream without confirming the downstream line is clear can relocate a blockage somewhere harder to reach, occasionally into a shared or municipal section.
None of this makes the service dangerous when it is done properly, and it is routine work for a crew that does it daily. It does mean an active backup is not the moment to experiment.
