Is hydro jetting better than snaking?
Neither is better outright. A cable is faster and cheaper for a solid object lodged in a line. Jetting is the only thing that removes buildup coating the pipe wall. The clog decides.
A cable auger is faster and cheaper when something solid is lodged in a line, and it is the right first move for most toilet and single-fixture backups. Hydro jetting is better when the problem is buildup along the whole pipe: grease, soap scum, mineral scale, sludge, fine roots. The cable makes an opening through that material; the jetter removes it.
So the real distinction is temporary versus thorough. On older or damaged pipe, snaking is also the gentler option, which sometimes makes it the correct choice even when jetting would clean better. Good shops carry both and run a camera to decide, instead of selling whichever machine happens to be on the truck.
Side by Side
| Factor | Cable Auger (Snaking) | Hydro Jetting |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Solid obstructions, single fixtures, toilets | Grease, scale, sludge, soap scum, fine roots |
| What it leaves behind | A channel through the blockage | A pipe wall scoured to bare material |
| Relative cost | Lower | Two to four times higher |
| Interval it typically buys | Months | Years |
| On fragile pipe | Gentler, often the safer choice | Needs pressure matched to the material |
| Setup required | Minimal | Water supply, access, usually a camera |
When the Cable Is Genuinely the Right Call
A toy in a toilet. A root plug dense enough to stall a chain nozzle. Any single-fixture clog where the line has no history of recurring trouble. And, importantly, any line a camera shows as structurally marginal, where the risk of jetting is not worth a better clean.
Snaking also wins on speed for a live emergency. If sewage is on the floor at 9pm, opening the line with a cable now and scheduling a proper cleaning for daylight is often the smarter sequence.
When Only Jetting Works
Grease is the clearest example. Cable through a grease-coated kitchen line and you get flow back immediately, because you have drilled a hole through a soft plug. The grease is still on the wall, still cooling, still catching. Four months later you are making the same call.
Same story with mineral scale in old cast iron, and with the root hair a cutter leaves ringing the circumference. In all three cases the material is on the pipe wall, and a cable only travels through the middle.
Why the Camera Is the Actual Answer
The honest version is that nobody should be choosing between these two over the phone. Material, age, defect and clog type decide it, and all four come from ten minutes of footage.
That is how we scope work: inspect, then recommend the cheaper method when it will hold and the more thorough one when it will not. Both sit under our Long Beach drain cleaning service with what each one costs.
